SÓLLER, MALLORCA & AN ORANGE OLIVE OIL CAKE

A TRIP THROUGH THE SERRA DE TRAMUNTANA, PASSING DEIÀ AND VALDEMOSSA TO SÓLLER AND PORT DE SÓLLER

Sóller, oranges

Orange and Blue. These are the colors that are flying through my head as soon as I start thinking about that beautiful town Sòller in the northwest of the Island that I so hardly desire – Mallorca. A cultural and beautiful little town that is known for its wealth of oranges.

A breeze of briefly cut orange zest is in the air. The intense and warm light of the Mediterranean sun is heating up our bodies. A gentle sea breeze sails across our skin and our soul is soaking up each and every second of that moment. That moment when you start to inhale and fully enjoy all of that feeling of relaxation.

DEIÀ, MALLORCA

It’s a sunny and warm April day when we get into our rented car and start our trip from Palma de Mallorca to the “Valley of Gold” what they fondly call that shining town Sóller. Embedded in mountains, surrounded by orange trees and adjoining the blue northwest coast of Mallorca.

We enjoy a wonderful ride through the serpentines of the Serra de Tramuntana. Getting up higher in the mountains and going down again on that narrow road. It’s a 40 minute ride along that winding road. Around every corner is waiting something to be discovered and it makes you want to stop every second just to see what else could be hidden. So we stopped. We stopped often. Just to enjoy what we saw and capture all of that beautiful surrounding.

All we see is the Mediterranean greenery, the very blue sky above our heads and orange trees wherever our eyes are wandering. Everything shines in a golden light. The ultimate feeling of pleasure.

TREN DE SÓLLER

For those Mallorca visitors who discover the Island without a car, there is a traditional and historical old train that brings you all the way from Palma de Mallorca through the Serra de Tramuntana to Sóller and finally Port de Sóller. The train starts from Plaça d’Espanya in Palma and arrives after about 1 hour and 28 kilometre at the desired destination, where you will not be disappointed by what you are about to discover.

When I was a child there were a lot of ice cream moments (trust me, really a lot). And I do remember them all very well. Especially the Ice Cream experience I had in Florence, Toscany – Italy. The best gelato I had so far. Until I tried the Ice cream in Sóller that is made out of their local fruits that grow all around that golden area of Sóller. Their Orange Ice Cream is to die for. So, if you are in Sóller go to Sa Fabrica de gelats on the Plaça des Mercat. They really know how to make Ice Cream.

ORANGE OLIVE OIL CAKE WITH A HONEY ORANGE ZEST GLAZE

_MG_2463

about the cake…

The taste of this Orange cake is just like its look. Fresh, moist and sweet. An easy but not less delicious recipe that tastes for me like the Island. The pure taste of Mallorquin oranges that explodes in your mouth once you tried the first bite of this cake.

A must-try recipe if you like oranges and delicious but easy to make cake with only a few ingredients. My version of a Sóller cake.
